Let this be a lesson to all future would-be Oscar winners: If you want to win a bunch of statues, hire some masked dude to shred on a fire-spitting electric guitar.

Mad Max: Fury Road might have missed out on wins in the big categories — Best Director and Best Picture — but it won six of its 10 nominations. None of the night’s other winners can boast such big numbers.

Mad Max dominated the evening’s technical categories, with wins for Costume Design, Production Design, Makeup & Hairstyling, Film Editing, Sound Editing and Sound Mixing.

Going into Sunday Night’s ceremony, The Revenant was the only film with more nominations than Mad Max, at 12. Its three wins — for Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Cinematography — were all in categories that Mad Max was nominated in as well. Read more…

Never a company to miss a moment for on-point branding, a new Disney solar farm in Florida is shaped like the head of beloved character Mickey Mouse.

The facility was built by Duke Energy Florida, which in May 2015 announced it would be building a large solar farm near the Walt Disney World ResortIn a statement, it said the facility’’s 48,000 solar panels would be arranged in a “Disney-inspired” design — clearly Aladdin, Simba or Mulan lost out and the company went with a classic.

United Continental’s stock climbs after big jump in buyback plans

Shares of United Continental Holdings Inc. climbed 3.5% in afternoon trade Friday, enough to make them the biggest percentage gainer among components of the Dow Jones Transportation Average . The air carrier disclosed in a filing late Thursday that it now expects to buy back about $1.5 billion worth of its common stock during the first quarter, compared with its previouly-announced plan to repurchase “about $750 million” of its shares. “It is obvious there is a newfound sense of urgency at UAL, which we could clearly see when we went out there two weeks ago with investors,” analyst Hunter Keay at Wolfe Research wrote in a note to clients. “It’s also likely that UAL’s board is listening to their biggest and/or more ‘active’ owners.” Even with Friday’s gain, the stock has dropped 19% over the past 12 months, while the S&P 500 has slipped 8.6%.

Say what you will about WeChat — there’s really no disputing that it’s China’s top social app, and as such it owns Spring Festival. But China’s other major social platform, Weibo, celebrated Chinese New Year too. And just like last year, activity on the site broke records as the clock wound down.

Specifically, Weibo parent company Sina says that Feb. 7 saw:

    • 134 million active users, a 31% increase compared to last year’s 102 million.

    • 51.9 million posts, a 15% increase from last year’s 45 million.

    • A 76% year-on-year increase in “interactivity” (although it’s not clear how Weibo measures that).

    • 18.2 billion total views of posts on Spring-Festival-related topics.

    • 100 million users who nabbed digital red envelopes (lucky money) via Weibo. Read more…
